It is necessary to keep water in the reservoir if you want the humidifier to work.

The wick is a filter that absorbs the water from the reservoir and is one of the main components of the humidifier. The evaporation of the water works on the phenomenon of relative humidity. All the humidifiers are self regulating, so they themselves regulate the rate of evaporation. To ensure best results from your humidifier, it is advised that you keep the filter absolutely clean. This also prevents some humidifiers to become a breeding ground for bacteria and molds. The fan is located just adjacent to the filter.
